The City of Jackson is located near the Mississippi River between St. Louis, Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee and is the county seat for Cape Girardeau County. It has a population of about 15,481 and is governed by a Board of Alderman-Manager form of government. Our Police Officers
The Jackson Police Department consists of 32 commissioned full-time Police Officers and 1 full-time civilian. Commissioned supervisory positions include 3 Sergeants, 3 Lieutenant,1 Captain, 1 Assistant Chief of Police and Chief of Police.
The duties of our Police Officer positions are similar to other law enforcement agencies. Officers perform general police work for the protection of life and property, order maintenance, preserving the peace and service to our community. Patrol assigned areas on foot or vehicle to deter and detect crimes. Respond to emergencies and provide general public safety services. Enforce criminal and traffic laws and local regulations as well as investigate crimes and traffic accidents. Officers must demonstrate ability to exercise quick, independent and sound judgment, and display initiative in applying work methods. Prepare reports. We offer a variety of Patrol, Investigative, and Special Duty assignment opportunities. Every day will bring a new, non-routine and exciting challenge to you and another opportunity to help and protect others. Our new Officers are hired with the expectation that during each day of their career, they will provide a high level of service to our customers, continuing the efforts of the dedicated men and women of our Department.. We are seeking police officer applicants who can accept responsibility, act independently, and be dedicated to serving our citizens as we continue to place an emphasis on community oriented police philosophies.

On the date of employment, applicants must be 21 years of age, United States Citizen, possess a valid driver's license; possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent; not have any felony or serious misdemeanor convictions; or convictions involving moral turpitude; must have a positive attitude along with good communications skills; good computer and report writing skills; and must be committed to the philosophy of community oriented policing. Must have tact and the ability to communicate with people and be able to take command of a wide variety of situations, some of them life-threatening. Applicants must be Missouri P.O.S.T. certified or have completed an approved academy training program of at least 480 hours and become Missouri P.O.S.T. Certified before date of employment.
Selected applicants will be required to undergo a written examination, physical agility test, oral board, psychological assessment and a comprehensive background investigation. Prior to employment, applicants must complete a medical examination and a pre-employment drug screen.
Associates degree in Law Enforcement / Criminal Justice; 60 hours of College Credit. Prior law enforcement experience. Missouri P.O.S.T. Certification.
The City of Jackson offers a competitive starting salary and excellent benefits package which includes family insurance coverage. The city offers employee retirement and the ability to participate in a deferred compensation plan. The department provides uniforms and equipment. We also offers a tuition reimbursement program that applies to courses at an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school for courses related to the employee's current position. Starting pay commensurate with experience.
The current pay schedule for Police Officers is as follows:
- Entry Level: $42,127
- Mid-Point: $52,135
- Ceiling: $65,479
